Student Practitioner: Acupuncture
Our student practitioners are at various stages of their acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) education and training, ranging from early-stage to advanced levels.
In a school clinic, student practitioners may offer acupuncture and TCM treatment under the supervision of licensed acupuncturists or TCM practitioners. These treatments may be part of the student practitioner's clinical training and are typically offered at a reduced cost compared to treatments provided by licensed practitioners.
During a treatment, the student practitioners may assess the patient's condition and formulate a treatment plan based on TCM principles and acupuncture protocols. They may also use a variety of TCM modalities, such as herbal medicine, dietary therapy, and tuina (a form of Chinese medical massage).
It is important to note that our student practitioners are not yet licensed healthcare providers and are not able to diagnose or treat conditions independently. They are in the process of gaining clinical experience and knowledge as they work towards becoming licensed practitioners. As such, it is important for patients to understand the limitations of treatment provided by junior student practitioners and to discuss any concerns or questions with their supervisor or a licensed practitioner.

During a treatment, the student practitioner includes both a diagnosis and a consultation on which herbs should be prescribed. Chinese medicine aims to address the root cause of illness or disease by considering a person’s whole-body health. The promotion of wellness and prevention of disease will be assisted by exploring a person’s lifestyle including dietary considerations, exercise and stress levels, environmental factors, and other areas of relevance that may impact a person’s experience of wellness. TCM therapies can be used on their own, or to complement other alternative or conventional medical treatments.
